BIOGRAPHY:
Too Velvet was born and raised in South East San Diego. He accredits most of what he learned musically from the late 80's, early 90's era, as he quotes “the jheri curl, golf hat, and Nike Cortez days”. Not only witnessing the actions of the local “OG’s”, “Too Velvet” actually experienced being under the wing of the hustlers, and really developed a love for the street lifestyle. During that time was when he also fell in love with West Coast gangsta rap.
Artists such as NWA, Too Short, DJ Quik, and east coast artist like Eric B & Rakim to Slick Rick gave him the encouragement needed to start rapping about his life, as well as the ups and downs of being involved with the streets.
His favorite genre of music is funk. The 70's-80's groups and artists such as Rick James (Mary Jane), Mtume (Juicy Fruit), Loose Ends (Hangin on a string), The Whispers (Lost and turned out), and Cameo (Single Life) to name a few is what inspires his kool “Velvet” style.
“Too Velvet” also stated: "That’s where we get that West Coast sound from. We may bring back a bass line from an artist like Anita Baker and its funky! I'm not really looking to keep up with the new fads in music and fashion. I'd rather bring the funk back with a lil’ ghetto twist for everybody to just enjoy.”
Set to release his group album entitled “The Pimp, The Mack, & The Banskta - 2010”, with group members MackAlino & Sonny Bo, “Too Velvet” is also gearing up for his solo album which will feature production from San Diego’s elite production duo “The Batkave” as well as MOS productions and The DueceFive Hitmen.
